CONSULAR WARDEN MESSAGE

APPOINTMENT REQUIRED TO REPORT THE BIRTH ABROAD OF AN AMERICAN CITIZEN

Starting on March 1, 2008, American Citizens must make an appointment to register the birth of an American citizen in Qatar through the U.S. Embassy in Doha.  Similar to a birth certificate issued by a state or local authority in the U.S., a Consular Report of Birth Abroad (CRBA) is a formal document certifying the acquisition of U.S. citizenship at birth of a person born abroad to a U.S. citizen parent(s).  Appointments will be made using our “Report Birth Abroad” webpage, http://qatar.usembassy.gov/birth_abroad.html, located in the U.S. Citizen Services section of the U.S. Embassy website.  The appointment system will go live starting on Monday, February 18, with the first appointments available on March 1, 2008.

Appointment times for CRBA registration will be available on Sundays and Wednesdays between the hours of 1:00 p.m. and 2:30 p.m.  American citizens should arrive at the U.S. Embassy at the appointed time and be fully prepared to submit all required forms and supporting documentation.  The fee for a Consular Report of Birth Abroad and a U.S. Passport is $150.  The fees can be paid in cash with U.S. Dollars or Qatari Riyals (QR) or with a valid major credit card.

To better serve the American community, the Consular Section will eventually require appointments for all routine services.  This is part of a worldwide initiative by the U.S. Department of State for all U.S. Consular Sections abroad.  While appointments may be required for most services, the American Citizens Services (ACS) Unit will always be open for true life or death emergency requests.  Please contact the ACS Unit with any questions at ACSConsularDoha@state.gov or [974] 488 4101 ext. 6117.

Americans traveling abroad should regularly monitor the U.S. Embassy in Doha's website, http://qatar.usembassy.gov, and the U.S. Department of State's travel website at http://travel.state.gov, where the current Worldwide Caution and other Travel Warnings and Travel Alerts can be found.  The U.S. Embassy also encourages U.S. citizens to review to "A Safe Trip Abroad," found at http://travel.state.gov/travel/tips/safety/safety_1747.html , which includes valuable security information for those both living and traveling abroad.  In addition to information on the Internet, travelers may obtain up-to-date information on security conditions by calling 1-888-407-4747 toll-free in the U.S. and Canada, or outside the U.S. and Canada on a regular toll line at 1-202-501-4444.

U.S. citizens living and residing in Qatar are advised to register their presence in the country through the U.S. Department of State's automated online registration system, https://travelregistration.state.gov.  U.S. citizens may also contact the Consular Section at the U.S. Embassy via email at ACSconsularDoha@state.gov or by calling 488-4101, extension 6117 for routine services or extension 6500 for after hours emergencies.  Further updates will be forthcoming when new information is available.  This complete message is available on the Embassy's website at http://qatar.usembassy.gov.
