Duhail Elementary School students visit the USS Dubuque |
U.S. Embassy Cultural Affairs Assistant, Mohamed Ahmed, and Pickering Fellow Daniel Villanueva invited the students of Duhail elementary School for a tour of the USS Dubuque, an Amphibious Transport Dock ship, which was conducting a port visit in Doha. The tour was led by the USS Dubuque’s Air Boss, Joseph Contoparssi, who highlighted interesting facts about the ship and answered questions from the students on everything from what the ship did to how the radar functioned.
The 11 students (aged 9-10 years old) were accompanied by their teacher as well as Duhail Elementary School’s Principal. The visit was the first contact for many of the students with American military personnel as well as their first time on such a large vessel. According to one of the students, “The tour was great and enjoyable. I learned that ships can be huge and can take loads of vehicles and other stuff.”Highlights of the tour for the students included sitting inside the vehicles in the cargo hold, seeing the navigation room, and being treated to ice cream following the tour.
