Study of the U.S. Institute Program

Embassy invites nominations for the Study of the U.S. program. The deadline for recieiving applications is October 1, 2007.

The U.S. Embassy in Doha, Qatar is pleased to invite candidate nominations for the Study of the U.S. Institute program entitled: "U.S. National Security: U.S. National Security Policymaking in a Post 9/11 World." The program will tentatively commence on  January 8 and end on February 20, 2008.

The U.S. government will cover all institute costs, including: international travel and allowances; housing and subsistence; and health insurance.

Institute description:

This study of the U.S. Institute is a rigorous post-graduate level academic seminar with integrated study tours. The purpose of this institute is to provide a multinational group of 18 experienced foreign university faculty and professionals from institutions of higher education abroad, as well as from other policymaking institutions, with a deeper understanding of the foundations and formulation of U.S. national security policymaking. A central focus of this Institute will be on American views of what constitutes basic U.S. national security and defense requirements and how those views have evolved in the post-cold war era. The program mill be multi-disciplinary in its approach and will examine many of the various historical, geographic, economic, cultural, and political factors involved in the making of U.S. foreign and national security policy.

The ultimate purpose of the program is to strengthen curricula and to improve the quality of teaching about the United States abroad.

Program requirements and restrictions:

Participants are expected to attend the entire program. They are also expected to attend all lectures and non-optional organized activities, and complete assigned readings. Family members and/or friends cannot accompany participants on any part of the program. Please note that teaching methodology and pedagogical techniques will not be addressed formally in the Institute. Candidates should be made aware that the Institute is very intensive and that there will be very little time for personal pursuits unrelated to the program. While the equivalent of one day a week will be set aside for mentored curricular research and independent study, the Institute should not be viewed as a research program.

Candidate description and qualifications:

Candidates should be mid-career, ideally not older than forty-nine years of age, highly motivated and experienced national security and foreign university faculty and professionals from Institutions of higher education abroad as well as from other national security policymaking institutions. Some may also hold positions in government ministries, such as defense or foreign affairs. The ideal candidate will be a specialist in International relations or a related field. While the educational level of participants will likely vary, most will have graduate degrees and have substantial knowledge of foreign affairs. All candidates should be interested in participating in an intensive seminar in order to better understand American institutions and to develop and improve courses about the United States at their home universities or policymaking institutions.

The ideal candidate will also be an experienced professional with little or no prior study experience in the U.S., whose home institution is seeking to introduce aspects of U.S. studies into the curriculum; to develop new courses in the subject of the institute; to enhance and update exiting courses on the united states; or to offer specialized seminars/workshops for professionals in policymaking institutions.

Candidates should be willing and able to fully take part in an intensive post-graduate level academic program and study tour. While senior faculty members are eligible applicants, we will give priority to younger and mid-career faculty, and persons who are likely to be comfortable with campus life and an active program schedule.

It is imperative that all candidates demonstrate English language fluency. Institutes are rigorous and demanding programs. Grantees will be expected to handle substantial reading assignments in English (2 to 50 pages per night is common) and to be full and active participants in all seminar and panel discussions. English fluency is vital to a successful experience in the institute.

Please be advised that Fulbright American Studies Institutes are highly competitive. We will only select one candidate from Qatar and our office in Washington DC will select the finalists.
