U.S.-Qatari LNG Terminal Nears Completion

May 8, 2009

U.S. Ambassador to Qatar Joseph LeBaron visited “Golden Pass,” a liquefied natural gas terminal off the coast of Texas that is due to begin delivering Qatari LNG to American markets by the middle of next year.

LeBaron toured the offshore facility with the Qatari Consul General in Houston, Mr. Rashid al-Khater, the Chairman of the Bilateral U.S.-Arab Chamber of Commerce, Mr. David Phillips, as well as ExxonMobil executives.

Ambassador LeBaron said, “This facility is another example of the importance of the trading relationships between Qatar and the United States.  Qatar can also be proud of the fact that much of the LNG that we will import through this terminal will be used to keep American families warm during the cold winter months.”

The Ambassador also said that he was pleased to see a joint project that provided jobs for both Qataris and Americans at a time when both countries were focused on finding quality employment for their citizens.

Golden Pass is a joint venture between Qatar Petroleum, ExxonMobil, and ConocoPhillips.  Once completed, the terminal will be capable of processing up to 15.6 million metric tons of LNG per year.
