  • 2012 Country Reports on Human Rights Practices Released (April 19, 2013)

    On April 19, 2013, Secretary Kerry submitted the 2012 Country Reports on Human Rights Practices (commonly known as the Human Rights Reports) to the U.S. Congress as required by law. This report, now in its 36th year, is available on www.State.gov and www.HumanRights.gov. It is required by law to inform U.S. government policymaking. It also serves as a reference for other governments, international institutions, non-governmental organizations, scholars, interested citizens, and journalists.   REPORT> »

  • Qatar Librarians Eager to Get Social. (April 7, 2013)

    A capacity crowd of more than 40 professional librarians from all over Doha attended a presentation on social media use in libraries, hosted by the Qatar University American Corner and led by IRO Heather Ward. Attendees were from school and university libraries, as well as the National Library, the Ministry of Justice, and Bloomsbury Publishing. Ward highlighted examples of social media practices from American libraries that included both best practices and pitfalls. She provided a virtual tour of selected platforms, including Facebook and Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, and Pinterest. An audience poll showed that most attendees were in the early learning stages, but that social media use is growing in Qatar and there is a clear interest in professional and personal development opportunities. 

  • U.S. Embassy and Qatari Security Forces Conduct Joint Exercise (March 30, 2013)

    The Qatari and U.S. forces conducted a joint exercise at the U.S. Embassy. The exercise was the culmination of an exchange between Qatar and U.S. forces called Project Star. Ambassador Ziadeh praised the cooperation between the two sides, stating, “Project Star demonstrates how the United States and Qatar are standing shoulder to shoulder to ensure a safer, more secure future for both our countries. Today's joint exercise offered an important opportunity for the U.S. Embassy's security professionals to exchange knowledge and best practices with their Qatari counterparts. 

  • Information Officer Speaks at Qatar University American Corner about Water Conservation (March 21, 2013)

    The American Corner at Qatar University Library (QULARC) celebrated World Water Day on Thursday March 21st. The event hosted university students who produced short films on the importance of conserving water and means of using it wisely. The event attracted wide and positive coverage from local news outlets. 

  • Ambassador Ziadeh Concludes Road Trip to Al-Khor and Al-Dhakhira (March 20, 2013)

    Ambassador Susan Ziadeh led the Embassy Doha team to Al-Khor and Al-Dhakhira, rural northern cities in Qatar, to connect with political and community institutions. The Ambassador met with Qatar’s Central Municipal Council members for a majlis lunch to discuss issues of mutual interest. Then she visited several cultural heritage destinations, including the Al Khor port and mangroves. She also spoke to students at two Qatari schools, including the Qatar Leadership Academy for aspiring Qatari military cadets, and to a girls’ school. Finally, the Ambassador engaged with Al Khor’s most active youth at two Qatari youth centers for boys and girls. There, she viewed sports, poetry recitation, art exhibitions, and also talked to youth about the importance of civic and community participation. 

  • Education Advisor Demystifies the U.S. University Application Process (March 12, 2013)

    On March 11 and 12, 2013, Education Advisor conducted two presentations on Education USA for graduate and under graduate students of Qatar University at the American Corner in the Qatar University Library. The presentation was followed by an interactive session of questions and answers which helped clear some of the doubts and misconceptions the students had about studying in America.  

  • Embassy Doha Concludes its Inaugural English Language Film Club at the Kawthar Girls’ School (March 11, 2013)

    On March 11th, PAS staff attended the Closing Ceremony for the Inaugural U.S. Embassy English Language Film Club at the Kawthar School for Girls. Over a period of several weeks, PAS staff worked with 30 students (grades 10, 11, 12) from the Kawthar School on an English Language Program which featured the U.S. documentary film, “An Inconvenient Truth.” During the program, students watched the documentary film and engaged in a number of hands on activities promoting discussion and debate about the film in their classroom. At the end of the program, each student presented their own review of the film to their peers and engaged in a peer review writing exercise. Because of the success of the program, the Kawthar School has requested that the Embassy continue its documentary film program the next academic year.
