U.S.-Qatari Concert Enchants Audiences

For Immediate Release
April 8, 2009

U.S. Ambassador to Qatar Joseph LeBaron hosted a magical evening of musical entertainment at his residence, bringing together Qatari and American musicians for a private concert that spanned genres, continents and history.

Abdulaziz Haidos, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Music Arts Center, delighted the audience with traditional Gulf rhythms on an Arab mandolin called the "oud."  Accompanying him was master percussionist Ateeq Saeed.

"Mirage," an American octet hailing from Colorado and comprised of wind and percussion instruments, played an eclectic variety of classical and American jazz pieces that flowed seamlessly with Haidos' songs.

Ambassador LeBaron said, "Music is one of the most basic expressions of a culture, and therefore a powerful means of communication between peoples.  I am proud to be hosting a concert that celebrates some of the finest Qatari and American musical artists."

During their visit to the country, Mirage will play at a number of schools and at other venues in Doha and Al Khor, helping to encourage Qatari children to express themselves through music.  Members of the ensemble will also have an opportunity to learn more about Qatar, Islam, and Arab life during their stay from fellow artists like Abdulaziz Haidos, making their visit a true cross-cultural exchange.
