Combat Zone Exclusion

There are two income exclusions associated with service abroad in a combat zone. The combat zone exclusion and the foreign earned income exclusion.

The combat zone exclusion applies only to compensation paid by the Armed Forces of the United States to members of the armed forces. You cannot claim a combat zone exclusion for income earned while performing services as a civilian in a combat zone.

For more information on combat zone exclusion refer to Publication 3, Armed Forces Tax Guide, at http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/p3.pdf.

Depending on how long you work abroad, the foreign earned income exclusion may be applicable to you as a civilian working in a combat zone. For more information on who qualifies for exclusion, please visit http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/p54.pdf.

Adobe Reader can be downloaded from http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html.

This information is provided by the IRS. For further questions related to taxes please visit http://www.irs.gov/.
