Arrival Statement by the United States Ambassador to the State of Qatar

July 28, 2008

My wife, Ellie, and I are delighted to have arrived in Qatar, where it will be my honor to represent the American people and the United States Government.  We began our diplomatic career here in Doha more than 25 years ago, and we look forward to re-discovering this beautiful country and its people.  I also look forward to supporting the thousands of Americans living in Qatar as they work to strengthen the bonds between our countries and people.

I want personally to thank Michael Ratney, my deputy, for his wonderful work.  For nearly a year, Mr. Ratney directed the work of the U.S. Embassy, and did it extremely well.  He and his team have also helped me enormously in preparing for Qatar, and I am grateful to all of them.

This is an optimistic time to be an American envoy in Qatar.  The strong friendship forged between our countries is based on a shared vision between our leaders and our people of a prosperous and stable Middle East whose development knows no bounds.   In the economic sector, American technology is helping bring Qatar’s natural wealth to the market.  Americans and Qataris are working side by side to educate a new generation of leaders through some of the best universities in the world.  We are together advancing dialogue on a range of issues that are vital to the future of the region and the world.

I look forward to doing all that I can to nurture this dynamic relationship.
